My Grandfather gave my Father this previously used Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator, its protective case and instruction sheet as shown in the first attached high resolution photograph when he started to work as an Electrician for the Pennsylvania Rail Road (PRR) at the Juniata Locomotive Shops in Altoona, PA, during the late 1950’s.My Father also used this Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator while attending college classes at the Altoona, PA campus of the Pennsylvania State University in the early 1960’s. My Father was a Korean War era Veteran and used his GI Education Bill benefits to attend college and obtain a Degree in Industrial Engineering. My father continued to use this Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator throughout the remainder of his railroad career which spanned over the PRR, Penn Central Transportation Company and Consolidated Rail Corporation.
After his retirement in 1992, this Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator along with his other office railroad plaques, certificates, photographs and other memorabilia was carefully packed into several plastic storage bins and cardboard boxes. My Father brought these items to their smoke free home in Altoona, PA and stored them in their master bedroom closet and adjacent guest room closet.
After my Father’s death in May 1999, my Mom knew that my Father wanted me to have all of his personal belongings. I went through my parent’s house and located all of the items that my Mom wanted me to take, which included this Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator. All these items were then brought back to our smoke free family residence in Manassas, VA.
The plastic storage bin containing this Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator was subsequently boxed with our other possessions during our relocation from Manassas, VA to Fort Myers, FL. While recently going through some moving boxes that were being stored in our second Master Bedroom Closet, I came upon the plastic storage bins that had my Father’s personal belongings.
Since we no longer have the space to indefinitely store all of these items, I have decided to sell these items on . The next item that I am offering to sell is this Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator, its protective case and instruction sheet.
This Allied Radio Resistance Capacitance Calculator is double sided and has three different ranges on each side. It calculates both parallel resistance and series capacitance. You slide the card so two values are lined up then follow the arrow on the right side and use the red scales to compute parallel resistance and the black scales to find series capacitance.
The front view of the Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator is shown in the second attached high resolution photograph. The top of the calculator has the following raised text: “ALLIED’SPARALLEL RESISTANCE and SERIES CAPACITANCE CALCULATOR” and the bottom of the calculator contains the following text: “ALLIED RADIO CORP. Everything in Radio and Electronics CHICAGO 7, ILLINOIS”. Note:There is no date on the front or back of the calculator, but my Father believed that my Grandfather had obtained this device between the years 1935 - 1940.The length of the calculator is 12 ½ inches long and its height is 3 ½ inches high.
The calculator’s slide is still functional as shown opened in the third attached high resolution photograph.
The rear view of the Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator is shown in the fourth attached high resolution photograph.
The front view of the Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator Instruction Sheet is shown in the fifth attached high resolution photograph.Note:There was a formula error on this instruction sheet that came from the manufacturer. The last entry on the left hand side originally came with “+” signs instead of the correct “-“signs. My Father inked the correct sign and noted it with “Cor” in the left hand margin. The instruction sheet has aged discoloration and contains some minor tears on its edges through work and school usage. The width of the instruction sheet is 8 ½ inches wide and its height is 11 inches high.
The rear view of the Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator Instruction Sheet is shown in the sixth attached high resolution photograph. The top of the instruction sheet contains the following text: “SETTINGS FOR COMPUTING RESISTANCE IN PARALLEL” and “Use Black Figures Only”. The content within the center of the document provides the procedures on how to use the calculator. The bottom of the page contains the following text: “ALLIED RADIO CORPORATION * 833 W. JACKSON BLVD * CHICAGO 7, ILLINOIS”. Note: This side of the instruction sheet has the same aged patina and tears as previously documented.
The front view of the Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator Protective Cover is shown in the seventh attached high resolution photograph. The top of the protective cover contains the following blue text: “ALLIED’SPARALLEL RESISTANCE and SERIES CAPACITANCE CALCULATOR”.Note: Although the protective cover has aged discoloration and written on, it served its purpose on keeping the calculator from being stained.
The rear view of the Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator Protective Cover is shown in the eighth attached high resolution photograph. This side of the cover is blank. Note: Although the protective cover has aged discoloration and written on, it served its purpose on keeping the calculator from being stained. The bottom of the cover contains the following text: “S-1088” as shown in theninth attached high resolution photograph.
This Allied’s Parallel Resistance Series Capacitance Calculator is in good condition considering its vast age and as noted in the text and exhibited in the attached photographs. This item would be a great addition for any Engineer Collector or Railroad Enthusiast.
