Antique 17th C. French Carved Wood Sculpture Madonna Virgin Mary Serpent Figure For Sale

A large and beautiful antique carved wood figure of the blessed Virgin Mary crushing the serpent, a foreshadowing of the Christ to come. It is likely French and from the 17th century. Back is hollowed which is typical construction of the period to reduce wood shrinkage, figure is solid and sturdy. The figure is in good condition overall for age and presents well with a nice patina. It has wear to surface and finish, scattered bumps/losses, arm reattached, etc. The face has not been repaired but is as it was first constructed. Others from this period are similar with it being inserted into the body and then the figure would have been covered with gesso and paint. Please all photos for condition and measurements.
