Heaton & Sooyoperated a mercantile business inManchester, Scott County, Illinois, primarily during the mid-to-late19th century.The firm was a prominent partnership betweenAlfred HeatonandMortimer Sooy. Key details of their business presence include:
  • Establishment:The partnership was active as early as the1860s. Alfred Heaton was a well-known local merchant and landowner who settled in Scott County in the 1830s.
  • Operations:They ran a general store and mercantile that served the agricultural community of Manchester. Business records and historical gazetteers from the1870s and 1880slist the firm as one of the leading commercial entities in the village.
  • Dissolution/Transition:By thelate 1880s or early 1890s, the partnership appears to have evolved or concluded as the principals aged or transitioned into other roles (such as banking and land speculation). Alfred Heaton, for instance, became heavily involved in the founding of local financial institutions.
