Description

Offered is an authentic late-19th-century proprietary druggist bottle embossed “Hood’s Pharmacy.” This bottle was produced for a local independent pharmacy and used to dispense compounded medicines, tinctures, or syrups prepared on site.

The bottle is formed in clear flint glass with a rectangular paneled body and diagonal script embossing panel, a classic pharmacy format of the 1880s–1890s. It features a thick applied rolled lip and a hand-finished base, confirming manufacture prior to the widespread adoption of machine-made bottles.

Unlike nationally marketed patent medicine bottles, this example represents a custom-ordered pharmacy container, produced in limited quantity for a single drugstore named Hood’s Pharmacy. The absence of a city in the embossing suggests a small local shop rather than a national brand.

Bottles of this type were commonly used for prescription mixtures, liniments, or internal medicines prepared directly by the pharmacist, making them important artifacts of Victorian-era medical practice.

This example retains strong embossing, good clarity, and an elegant tall profile typical of professional drugstore ware from the late 19th century.
