Here's a genuine little piece of Washington history that's been traveling around since Teddy Roosevelt's day.
This antique postcard is titled “Washington, D.C., The Mall looking toward the Capitol.” The view looks across the old National Mall toward the United States Capitol, with the red Smithsonian Castle standing prominently in the foreground.
This particular postcard has some nice documented history behind it. The U.S. House of Representatives collection holds an example of this same Hugh C. Leighton postcard and dates the issue to 1907-1909. Their description even points out the train traveling from the old Baltimore and Potomac railroad station in the middle of the scene.
This copy was actually used and mailed on August 5, 1909. It retains its original green 1-cent postage stamp, cancellation and handwritten correspondence and was addressed to Mrs. Wm. Ludwig in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.
Pre-owned antique condition with the expected corner, edge and handling wear from more than a century of age. There is a small crease/damaged area at the lower right corner. Please see both photographs for the exact condition.
A mighty nice survivor for a Washington D.C., Capitol, Smithsonian or early American postcard collection — and this one didn't spend the last 117 years waiting around for Grandpa Green to find it.
