The La Plaza Hotel (later renamed the Pass-a-Grille Hotel) was a pioneering, luxurious early 20th-century resort located at the northernmost limits of the historic beach community of Pass-a-Grille on Long Key (now part of St. Pete Beach, Florida).
Before the iconic \"Pink Palace\" (The Don CeSar) was constructed further north in 1928, La Plaza reigned as the grandest and most comfortable resort accommodation on the Pinellas County gulf beaches.
Key Details & History
Origin and Construction (1906): The hotel was built in 1906 by Anna Heinkel, the oldest daughter of Zephaniah Phillips (Pass-a-Grille\'s very first homesteader). It was positioned near what is modern-day 24th to 26th Avenues and Pass-a-Grille Way. At a time when the island was mostly isolated and dominated by simple wood-frame cottages, La Plaza was a major leap forward in attracting wealthy seasonal tourists.
The Fuller Era & Expansion (1913): In 1913, the hotel was purchased by St. Petersburg real estate, infrastructure, and transportation magnate H. Walter Fuller and his son, Walter P. Fuller. They renamed it the Pass-a-Grille Hotel and used their Favorite Steamship Line and the St. Petersburg and Gulf Railway Company to offer wealthy mainlanders coordinated, scheduled travel packages directly to the resort.
The Resort Amenities: To transform it into a true flagship destination, the Fullers heavily modernized and expanded the property. They dredged a deep-water channel through Mud Key to build a dedicated steamship dock on the bay side. On the Gulf side, they constructed an elaborate recreation casino and an expansive pleasure pier extending directly out over the water, complete with a popular \"Shell Walk\" linking the attractions.
The 1921 Hurricane and Destruction
The resort\'s golden era came to an abrupt end in late October 1921, when a historic, category 1 major hurricane slammed into the Tampa Bay area.
The storm\'s massive tidal surge and punishing waves completely destroyed the Gulf-front recreation casino and left the main hotel structure heavily compromised and in ruins.
The following year (1922), a devastating fire tore through what remained of the damaged hotel complex, burning the main structure to the ground.
Unable to rebuild the grand resort, the Fullers replatted the expansive grounds into residential housing lots in 1923.
Surviving Footprint Today
While the grand main hotel building is long gone, a piece of its original architecture miraculously survived both the 1921 hurricane and the subsequent fire.
The hotel’s original, separate concrete apartment building—which housed the resort\'s staff and servants just north of the main lodge—was built by the Fullers in 1913. Located near 26th Avenue and Sunset Way, this structure survived the elements, transitioned into a landmark private residence known for decades as The Butler House, and has since been beautifully refurbished and integrated into a modern nine-unit condominium complex.
