Here is an original antique Coffee cup made by Mayer China for the Horn & Hardart Automat restaurants. This is a cup from the original copyright pattern (1923) and manufacturer (Mayer China - Beaver Galls, PA -(this is Prior to Shenango China buying Mayer and Mayers patterns) - made for H&H. This is the classic Nassau pattern. A great piece of Horn & Hardart history!

The exact history of the piece can be broken down using the stamps on the bottom:
- The Pattern Name & Copyright: The top of the stamp shows the pattern name NASSAU and a copyright number 68034. According to the official US Catalog of Copyright Entries for Works of Art, the "Nassau pattern" was designed by William T. Johnson for the Mayer China Co. of Beaver Falls, PA, and was registered on March 15, 1923.
- The Famous Client: The stamp specifies this piece was "Made For The Horn & Hardart Co." Horn & Hardart operated the legendary, iconic Automat cafeteria chains in Philadelphia and New York City. This beautiful, deep-green/blue Art Nouveau floral pattern was an staple of their self-service cafeterias during the early 20th century.
- The Distributor: The text at the very bottom, "Wright, Tyndale & Van Roden," was a prestigious china and glassware retail and distribution firm based in Philadelphia that acted as the middleman to outfit the local Horn & Hardart locations.
While the pattern itself was introduced in 1923, this specific mug was likely manufactured right around that time through the mid-to-late 1920s, as Mayer China changed their backstamp styles and distribution partnerships heading into the 1930s. This is a fantastic, tangible piece of American restaurant history!
