Authentic antique American wool horseblanket made by Springfield Blanket Co., Inc. of Holyoke, Massachusetts, amajor historic manufacturer of horse blankets.

Springfield Blanket Company was established inHolyoke in 1870 and became one of the country's important horse-blanketmanufacturers. The firm incorporated in December 1919, so the “Inc.” marking showsthat this blanket was made after that date. Based on its construction,materials and appearance, it probably dates to the 1920s or early 1930s.
This measures an impressive 89" x78" and has its original horse-blanket hardware: circular leatherreinforcements, adjustable leather strap and metal buckle.. The heatheredgray/taupe wool ground is woven with broad repeating stripes in rust, goldenyellow, olive, cream, brown and black. Fabric reinforcement patches for theleather are visible on the reverse behind the leather fittings.
Not only an authentic piece of early American horse equipment, this is astriking decorative textile. The muted colors, aged leather and bold stripingwould work beautifully in Western, ranch, equestrian, lodge, cabin, Adirondack,English country, rustic farmhouse or Ralph Lauren-inspired interiors.
Condition: Good antique condition withexpected evidence of age and use. It has been cleaned. There are scatteredstains and areas of discoloration, all consistent with age & use. One sectionof the blanket-stitched edge has some fraying, as photographed. Original strapand buckle are present and the leather is in good shape. Please examine allphotographs closely for condition.
