The Historic "Bascule" Mechanism
The French term "bascule" translates to rocker, tilt, or scale. This refers to the ingenious mechanical design where each snail-shaped porcelain ink pot pivots forward or tilts against a metal backing stopper. Highly popular during the Victorian era, this sophisticated layout successfully restricted airflow to the wells, effectively preventing the ink from drying out when not in use.
