Antique glass PH Hanes Knitting Co of Winston-Salem North Carolina advertising paperweight. Manufactures of Men’s ribbed underwear in colors. Selling agents Clift & Goodrich 74 Leonard St New York. Due to research below, this paperweight can be dated to be produced during the first 17 years of operation of PH Hanes Knitting Company. Paperweight is in excellent condition, without any chips, cracks, or damage to the glass. Paperweight has a very unique design with multi-colored shirt, backside shows where someone had to hand attach the colors to the branded logo insert. Underside is ribbed to give inflection to the logo and glass.
Founder Pleasant Henderson Hanes, sold his tobacco company PH Hanes Tobacco in 1901 and then opened PH Hanes Knitting Co in 1902. Clift & Goodrich were retailers as early as the late 1800s, but operated under the name “Clift & Goodrich” from 1906-1919. With peak business operations during World War I due to massive government contracts. Edward Clift passed away in 1916, but the partnership layout technically preserved his name for several years under Goodrich's management. In 1919, company name changed to Clift & Goodrich, Inc.
