Happy Art Nouveau / Jugendstil Double Inkwell Desk Stand - Pattern #1109
A striking cast desk stand in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style, featuring two hinged lidded inkwells flanking a center pen tray channel decorated with an arrow motif. The hinged lids have floral rosette pulls and open and close smoothly and securely. A pierced arcade/gallery detail runs across the top, and the front features a triangular relief panel depicting a woman with a sheaf of wheat and flowers, with a village scene in the background - a classic Jugendstil \"harvest\" genre motif. The base is stamped with the pattern number 1109 - no maker\'s name was found, but this style of gilt-cast double inkstand with a pierced architectural gallery and genre relief scene is associated with the German and Austrian metalware foundries of the period (the same houses that produced Kayserzinn and WMF Jugendstil desk pieces), likely dating circa 1900-1910.
Material appears to be a gilt-finished spelter/white metal casting (please review photos closely, as I cannot verify base metal with certainty). It is notably heavy and substantial in the hand.
Condition: This is an estate find being sold as-is, uncleaned, with all its age and character intact. There is an old, dark patina throughout along with visible tarnish, dirt, and small spots of verdigris (green oxidation) consistent with age - to me, that\'s part of the charm of an untouched antique piece, but please look closely at all photos as they\'re part of the description. The piece has two inkwell openings/slots, but only ONE period glass inkwell liner is included (pictured); the second opening does not have a liner. Both hinged lids open and close smoothly. No cracks or breaks noted in the metal casting itself.
