A 5.5x3.5" vintage RPPC photo postcard from the estate of a vintage automobile postcard collector. This was part of a huge collection of antique postcards.
Photo Overview
This real photo postcard captures an early brass-era touring automobile parked on the lawn before a large Victorian house with a distinctive arched wraparound porch. A well-dressed Edwardian couple is seated in the open touring car - a gentleman at the wooden steering wheel wearing a flat driving cap, and a lady beside him in a large plumed hat and long pale traveling dress. Behind the vehicle, a group of six family members and friends in period suits, dresses, and hats stand posed along the porch railing, watching the proud new automobile owners.
The car itself appears to be an early open runabout or touring model from roughly 1905 to 1908, with a rounded hood, brass acetylene headlamps, wooden artillery-spoke wheels, right-hand steering, and a folding top frame - hallmarks of the American brass era. The styling of the radiator, low-slung hood, and body is consistent with an early two-cylinder runabout such as a Buick Model F, Reo, or similar mid-priced touring car of the period. The image is a wonderful slice of American social history showing the excitement of early automobile ownership at the dawn of the motoring age.
