Antique BLACK FOREST GERMANY Hand Carved Wood Sculpture MAN PLAYING PAN PIPES

Size- 11.5\" high x 5.5\" wide [side to side] and 3.5\" deep [front to back]

Base approx. 4.75\" x 3\"

Extremely fine carving- details are incredible, small carved details and EXTREMELY lifelike representation

Outstanding piece of carved Art. He is meant to represent the Nature God PAN and was frequently depicted in Bavarian/German artwork as a beggar who is encountered in the woods or along roadways, playing the flute. He is wearing a large floppy hat, presumably to disguise his goat\'s ears. Even the shape of his eyes are slanted correctly as a goat\'s would be. He has the typical \'goat\'s beard\' and is in a pose suggestive of Pan which has been used for centuries- slightly crouched forward. He is of course barefoot, as a wild creature. The flute he is playing is known as a PAN FLUTE even today.

His personality is very evident- he looks sly, joyful, and cunning.

Carved from a solid piece of linden wood [basswood] with lovely grain and striations.Wood has been gently polished to have a natural smooth finish.

These were produced for a very specific \'World Tourism\' market that flourished in the late Victorian/Edwardian era. I would be very confident dating this piece to the early 1920s or before.

VERY charming piece. One of a kind.

Excellent condition, no scratches, chips, nicks, or repair- pristine. Wood grain shows natural variations such as 2 lighter areas on the back [not scrapes or damage, naturally occurring lightness within wood grain]. Carved by a Master Carver, highly collectible.

Acompletely uniquesculpture- would look great on a mantle piece etc, a very special gift for an Art collector
