A dramatic and unusual figural wall piece combining sculpture and function.Folk art carved and polychrome painted towel rack in the form of a turbaned male figure in dramatic pose, grasping a cobra. Richly carved and painted in great detail, with a maroon toga, finely detailed snake\'s head and skin, etc. Strikingly detailed facial features.This type of figural carving reflects the Moorish / Orientalist decorative tradition popular in late 19th century European design. Similar examples are often associated with Italian (including Venetian) workshops producing decorative pieces for the Grand Tour market. A highly unusual and visually compelling wall-mounted functional sculpture.
