Antique Dugan Marigold Carnival Glass Top Hat Vase c1910 Art Glass

Description

A striking antique carnival glass vase by the Dugan Glass Company, dating to the early 20th century. This rare “Top Hat” form features a flared, folded brim rim, rich marigold iridescence, and vertically ribbed body terminating in a molded starburst base.

Produced during Dugan’s golden era of carnival glass manufacturing (circa 1909–1915), this sculptural form exemplifies the organic shaping and warm metallic glow prized by collectors. Displays beautifully under natural or artificial light.

Origins & Early Years

The Dugan Glass Company was established in 1904 in Indiana, Pennsylvania, by Thomas Dugan, a former superintendent of the Northwood Glass Company. From the start, Dugan was positioned as a serious competitor to Northwood, producing pressed and blown decorative glass with strong artistic emphasis.

In 1909, a major fire destroyed the Indiana plant. Rather than rebuild, the company relocated to Washington, Pennsylvania, where production resumed quickly—this move coincided with Dugan’s most important period.

Carnival Glass Innovation (c. 1909–1913)

Dugan is now best remembered as one of the early innovators of Carnival Glass, producing richly iridized wares during the style’s formative years.

Key characteristics of Dugan carnival glass:
•Soft, glowing iridescence (especially marigold)
•Organic, sculptural forms
•Heavy glass with excellent mold definition
•Frequent use of starburst or sunburst bases
