Antique Early Austrian Faience Beer Stein - Courting Couple circa mid-1700s

Description: Presented is a very old Austrian beer stein made in the first half of the 18th century, around 1730s - 1740s. The stein was made in Austria, in the Niederösterreich or Lower Austria, in the northeastern part of the country. The Austrian faience steins are characterized by bright green colors and a kind of primitive, naive art images. The Lower Austria region was once famous for faience production. The stein is made of the light brown clay with tin-based white glaze.

The stein is decorated with a hand-painted picture showing a courting couple. The man is wearing his back hair in a queue - probably indicating a higher social status. The lady is holding a flower bouquet. The stein was probably made as a wedding or wedding anniversary gift.

The stein shows a couple of tight short lines but no major cracks, breaks, chips or repairs. The lid is pewter with a large hollow ball thumblift. It is 8" tall, with a little less than 1L capacity.

This is a historical beer drinking vessel about 300 years old. It represents artistic, technological and historical value. I guarantee my description and dating! It is based on my own expertise and also on consultation with the world's most prominent beer stein collectors.
