Antique Edwardian Celluloid Hair Comb Blue Rhinestones Two Tone c1900 6” For Sale

Exceptional antique ornamental hair comb dating to the early 20th century, approximately 1900–1910.

This is an especially elaborate and beautifully made example.

The comb is constructed of translucent golden-amber celluloid with a second, very dark amber/brown—appearing nearly black—decorative layer.

The contrasting dark layer follows the elaborate scrolling and foliate openwork design and also extends onto the long comb tines.

The decorative arch is densely embellished with brilliant deep blue rhinestones. Rows of stones follow the outer edges and the dramatic central scrolls, creating a particularly rich jeweled appearance.

The celluloid remains remarkably clear and glossy with relatively little wear for its age.

The celluloid is remarkably clear and retains a beautiful glossy surface.

The intricate openwork appears very well preserved.

Two small blue rhinestones are missing. Their settings remain present, and replacement stones of the appropriate size could be fitted if desired.

I have chosen to leave the comb in its present antique state rather than replace them.

AGE & COMPARISON

The University of New Hampshire’s Irma G. Bowen Historic Clothing Collection documents an amber-colored celluloid ornamental hair comb with blue rhinestones as Early 1900s (Museum No. 428c).

That museum comb is a different design, but provides a useful documented comparison for the material, ornamental back-comb form and blue rhinestone decoration of the period.

This unusually elaborate example would make a striking addition to a collection of antique hair ornaments, celluloid jewelry or Edwardian fashion accessories.
