Wonderful antique French Grey-Poupon Dijon mustard pot, dating to approximately 1866–1876.
This early advertising jar was manufactured by the renowned Creil & Montereau pottery during the Lebeuf, Milliet & Cie (L.M. & Cie) period. The underside retains its black transfer factory mark reading “L.M. & Cie / Déposé / Creil et Montereau.”
The front features an elaborate black transfer decoration with the Grey-Poupon name, Dijon coat of arms, grapevine motif, and “Maison Fondée en 1777.” The 1777 date refers to the founding of the mustard house.
This is a beautiful white pot with clear black transfer lettering is in good condition with some chips on the front face, a few on the left body, one
on the back rim, and a small one on the top mouth. This pot displays very well and the extraordinary ornate labeling makes it one of my favorites. This is a large size at 5 1/2" tall with a base diameter of 3" and mouth opening of 1 3/4.”
Most pots have some level of crazing, may have spots of discoloration, light hairline cracks and minor chips and fleabites that should be considered patina, additions to character and do not detract from its display value. These are expected due to age, use and often being buried for decades before being dug up and rescued.
