Wonderful antique folding pocket nail file/manicure tool, dating approximately to the 1920s–1930s.
The handle is distinctly stamped:
FRENCH IVORY
“French Ivory” was a period name used for ivory-colored celluloid/early plastic made to imitate natural ivory. This piece is not represented as genuine animal ivory.
The handle has an unusually graceful, sculptural shape with a narrow waist and dramatically flared end. The steel nail file folds against the handle when not in use, making this a compact travel or pocket manicure accessory.
The metal file has a textured filing surface and pointed end. Two small metal pins/rivets are visible near the pivot.
A particularly attractive survivor from the era of elaborate personal grooming and vanity accessories. Great for a collection of antique manicure tools, vintage vanity accessories, early plastics, French Ivory or Art Deco-era personal accessories.
