These cards are antique French piquet playing cards. Each set includes the ace, king, queen and jack. This listing is for the CLUBS.
These cards are originally part of a 32 card piquet set that is incomplete. These cards would make a great gift or statement picture when framed and added to a games room. Alternatively they could be used for crafts, such as greetings cards, scrapbooking or collaging. Or use them to complete your set!
These cards date to between 1816 and 1827 and were printed using wood blocks. The face cards are printed in black, red, yellow, light blue and dark blue and are full body figures. Each jack, queen and king is personally named after a historical figure. The jack of clubs holds an oversized medallion with the words "Administration des Contributions Indirectes, 1816" on indicating that they are an official set with the stamp tax paid. The cards themselves have square corners and plain beige / buff backs, common with early cards of this era. They do not feature the indices in the corner that are present on modern cards.
This is a vintage item and so may show signs of its previous life. Overall these cards are in very good condition with no dog ears, rips or tears. The colours are sharp and vivid but the cards show signs of age with some dirt. Please see photos for details.
