Exceptional antique German covered tureen produced in Bavaria by Jaeger & Co (J & C), Marktredwitz, Germany, circa 1898–1923. This elegant oval tureen features delicate hand-applied floral decoration in soft pastel tones with original gilt accents along the rim and lid edge. The form is refined and substantial, with a domed lid, sculpted central handle, and matching side handles, reflecting high-quality German porcelain craftsmanship of the late 19th to early 20th century. Based on the factory mark “J & C / Portland / Bavaria” and the absence of U.S. importer or distributor stamps, this piece was not commercially imported into the United States. It is most likely that it was brought to the U.S. by a family of German origin during immigration waves of the early 20th century, either before, during, or after World War I or World War II. The tureen has survived for over a century in remarkable condition and represents a rare and authentic example of pre-war Bavarian porcelain intended for European domestic use rather than mass American retail.
