John Howell & Son were Hastings’ leading Victorian building and engineering firm. John Howell Senior (c.1825–1893), later Mayor of Hastings, won the major 1873 contract to develop the Cornwallis Estate — including Cambridge Gardens, Cornwallis Gardens and Holmesdale Gardens. He and his son John Howell Junior (1851–1903) lived on the estate. This lease is for a house on the very streets they built.Also of interest for Holy Trinity parish and 19th-century Hastings property history.
