A True Victorian Survivor: J. & E. Mayer Semi-Vitreous Vegetable Tureen (Circa 1881–1888)
A remarkable piece of American ceramic history. This covered vegetable dish (tureen) was manufactured in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, during the very first decade of the J. & E. Mayer pottery’s operation.
Condition Report: "The Fingertip Test"
This piece is a genuine "survivor" in great structural condition.
After a thorough physical inspection, there are no chips, no cracks, no flea bites, and no nips anywhere on the piece.
Vibrant Gold Gilt: The hand-applied gold leaf on the handles and the lid finial remains in bright condition with almost no rubbing or wear.
Antique Character: As is expected for 140-year-old semi-vitreous ironstone, there is fine, all-over surface crazing and some internal "tea staining" to the bowl and base. This is purely aesthetic and serves as an authentic hallmark of its Victorian age.
