Standing at 7 inches tall, the censer features a heavy-gauge, multi-tiered square body balanced elegantly on three stylized tripod feet. The exterior is richly embellished with deep relief-sculpted bands of blooming sakura (cherry blossoms) and historic repeating geometric crest panels. A pair of sweeping loop handles frame the main vessel. The crowning achievement of this censer is its beautifully pierced, vented original lid, which plays host to a fiercely detailed Shishi (Japanese Guardian Lion-Dog) resting its paw upon a sacred Buddhist jewel. As incense burns within, the smoke dynamically vents through the openwork of the lid and the lion's jaws.
