Antique Japanese Lacquer Round Box 1860s Urishi Work - Meiji Period Hand Painted For Sale

This is a lovely, hand made, antique, Japanese lacquer box from the mid - late 1800s . It is a circular trinket or tea-caddy style container. This excellent example of the Japanese Urishi work was recently acquired from an old, Manhattan estate and is new to the market. (It has a very old, vintage price label of $22.50 which i have left on this antique piece as part of its provenance).

Its key features include:

• Black, finely crackled lacquer exterior with a bright red/orange lacquer interior, a common color pairing in Japanese urushi work of the Meiji era.

• Hand-painted dove-like bird in flight on the lid with faint stylized cloud or landscape motifs around the sides, consistent with export-decorated Japanese boxes.

• Cylindrical form about 3\" tall with a lift‑off lid, typical of multipurpose accessory boxes used for small items such as sweets, tobacco, or desk objects.

What it was used for:

• Most likely a general-purpose keepsake or accessory box rather than a specific ritual object.
