Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print created by the renowned artist of the late Edo period, Teisai Hokubai (1756 - 1829), one of the most outstanding pupils of Hokusai.
Hokuba was one of the earliest and best of Hokusai’s pupils. A printmaker, but only of surimono, book illustrator, and, most importantly, a fine painter. Hokuba worked primarily, though not exclusively, as a painter. He is best known for his paintings of bijin (beautiful women). The subjects of these works were the elegant ladies of the pleasure quarters. We see them pursuing various seasonal activities - catching fireflies, admiring the cherry blossoms, or strolling through the Yoshiwara.
The print portrays one of the beauties that Hokuba was so skilled at depicting, admiring a fading autumn plant as a symbol of the ukiyo - the floating world.
This woodblock print was published as part of the series"Masterpieces of Old Japanese Color Prints", published by the Nippon Gasui-sha around 1923 - 1925. Most likely, it was created after a painting by Hokuba. "Nihon Mokuhanga Sui" was a collection of woodblock prints from the Taisho era, and rather than being intended as a reproduction of ukiyo-e, it has a strong character as a catalog showcasing the pinnacle of the era's woodblock printing techniques. Some of the reproductions even include works that might not have been woodblock prints but rather hand-painted.
It is framed in a beautiful vintage bamboo imitating a wooden frame.
The backplate is a mirror - a real glass mirror, quite an unusual backplate.
