An exceptional and highly collectible antique sterling silver filigree letter opener from the legendary Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, Jerusalem, masterfully designed in the form of a ceremonial sword. Signed “Made in Palestine,” this elegant piece dates to the British Mandate period (pre-1948), when Bezalel workshops produced some of the finest Judaica and souvenir objects ever created in the Holy Land.
Founded in Jerusalem in 1906 by Professor Boris Schatz, the Bezalel School was established to create a distinctive Jewish artistic tradition in the Land of Israel. Inspired by biblical themes, ancient Jewish symbolism, Art Nouveau, and Middle Eastern decorative arts, the school became the birthplace of modern Israeli art and design. Its workshops produced exceptional works in silver, brass, wood, textiles, and ceramics, combining European artistic vision with the remarkable craftsmanship of Yemenite Jewish silversmiths, whose delicate filigree techniques became one of Bezalel’s defining artistic signatures.
