Antique Photo Fowler\'s Drug Store Rock Sign Bristol NH Newfound Lake c1900 Description
Unusual antique mounted photograph showing a scenic lakeside road and rocky shoreline near Bristol, New Hampshire, featuring a large early advertising sign painted or carved directly onto the rock face.
The advertisement appears to read:
“Fowler\'s Headquarters
Drugs and Medicines
Est. 1868
Bristol, N.H.”
Above the lettering is a large mortar and pestle, the traditional symbol of a pharmacy/druggist.
Historical records confirm that Fowler\'s Drug Store operated in Bristol, New Hampshire, and Fowler\'s Drug Store is also known to have published period postcards depicting Newfound Lake, making it quite possible that this photograph depicts a road along Newfound Lake.
The photograph provides a fascinating glimpse of early roadside advertising, when businesses sometimes painted advertisements directly onto prominent rock faces along well-traveled routes.
Measures approximately 8\" x 10\" overall, including the original heavy cardboard mount.
The photograph appears to date from approximately the late 1890s to early 1900s. Exact date and precise location are unknown.
A particularly interesting piece of Bristol, New Hampshire / Newfound Lake / early pharmacy and advertising history.
Condition
Antique condition with considerable surface wear to the mount, including scratches, scuffs, edge and corner wear and staining/discoloration on the reverse. Photograph has age-related fading and surface wear but retains good detail, including the unusual Fowler\'s advertising sign. Please see all photos for condition.
