Original antique sepia photograph showing a group of women and young children gathered outside Mt. Nebo United Presbyterian Church in Ohio Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, near Sewickley.
Four women stand at the church entrance with several infants and small children, including a young boy posed on the steps. Their clothing suggests that the photograph was probably taken during the 1910s or early 1920s. The image may record a church gathering, baptismal occasion, Sunday service, or meeting of local families.
A shield-shaped sign beside the entrance identifies the building as:
“MT. NEBO
UNITED PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCH”
Additional lettering advertises Sabbath services and Sabbath School. A pastor’s name appears near the bottom of the sign but is too indistinct to identify confidently.
Mt. Nebo United Presbyterian Church was organized on June 17, 1838, by members of 14 local families. Hugh Thompson and William Duff donated the original church property. The congregation’s first building was a log structure, which was replaced by the church shown here in 1884. Later additions were constructed between 1953 and 1957. The congregation remains active at 1828 Roosevelt Road in the Sewickley postal area of Ohio Township.
This is an appealing early image combining Pennsylvania church history, local genealogy, women’s and children’s clothing, religious history, and an identifiable Allegheny County location. Early photographs of the congregation and its nineteenth-century church building are uncommon.
The reverse is blank, with no names, date, or photographer’s identification.
