Original antique stereoview photograph depicting the massive Gratiot 4,000 Horse Power engine associated with the historic copper mining industry of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The stereoview is captioned on the front:

The remarkable interior photograph shows the enormous industrial machinery with several workers posed alongside and above it, providing an excellent sense of scale.
A period pencil inscription on the reverse appears to identify the subject as one of the large engines associated with the Calumet & Hecla mining operations at Lake Superior, Michigan, and refers to multiple giant engines housed together.
Calumet & Hecla was one of the most important names in Michigan’s historic Copper Country, and period records document both the Gratiot mining property and large named Gratiot hoisting machinery associated with the company’s operations.
An excellent early industrial photographic subject with strong interest to collectors of Michigan mining, Copper Country, Calumet & Hecla, steam engines, industrial history and antique stereoview photography.
