Antique Veterinary Pin Firing / Cautery Iron Collection – Two Cased Sets – Sharp & Smith Chicago & Star Marked
Offered together is an impressive collection of two antique veterinary pin-firing / thermocautery apparatus sets, each housed in its own fitted wooden carrying case and retaining a variety of original or period accessories.
These are specialized pieces of early equine veterinary equipment associated with the historical practice of pin firing and thermocautery, once used primarily in the treatment of horses. The two sets are especially interesting because they display different period manufacturer or identification markings, including a documented Sharp & Smith, Chicago connection on one set and a distinctive five-point star trademark with the number 958 on the other.
Sharp & Smith – Chicago Veterinary Instrument Set
One of the two apparatuses carries Sharp & Smith / Chicago identification.
Sharp & Smith was an established Chicago manufacturer and supplier of surgical and veterinary instruments during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Surviving period records include an 1890 Sharp & Smith catalogue devoted specifically to veterinary surgical instruments, demonstrating that veterinary equipment was an important part of the company\'s product line. Later Sharp & Smith veterinary catalogs continued well into the early 20th century.
The Sharp & Smith marking is therefore particularly significant from a collecting standpoint because it connects this apparatus to a known American medical and veterinary instrument manufacturer rather than leaving it as an unidentified generic veterinary tool.
The Sharp & Smith apparatus consists of a substantial elongated handpiece with metal shaft, insulated or covered hand grip, working head, adjustment hardware, and associated heating/firing components. Various fittings, burner components, containers, and attachments remain with the fitted wooden case.
Period Sharp & Smith veterinary firing irons are known in surviving collections and the antique-instrument market, making the manufacturer name an important feature of this grouping.
Five-Point Star Marked Veterinary Cautery / Pin-Firing Apparatus – No. 958
The second apparatus has a particularly prominent five-point star emblem deeply stamped into the metal working-head assembly.
On the opposite side of the same assembly is the clearly stamped number:

The star appears to have been intentionally applied as a manufacturer\'s trademark or identifying emblem, rather than being incidental damage or decoration. The crisp placement of the emblem on the main metal fitting and the separate numerical marking strongly suggest factory identification.
At this time, however, the exact manufacturer represented by the five-point star has not been positively established, so the set is being described according to the markings actually present rather than attributing it to a company without documentation.
The 958 marking may represent a model, pattern, production, assembly, inventory, or serial-style number. Its exact original meaning has not been confirmed. Regardless, the combination of the large star trademark and numbered fitting provides an excellent identifying feature for further research and distinguishes this apparatus from the Sharp & Smith example.

The procedure eventually became obsolete, leaving surviving equipment such as these sets as historical examples of an earlier period of veterinary medicine.
