The 131 Barr Street address is an important early Hudson marking, generally associated with production during approximately 1885–1888, although the address stamp appears to have remained in limited use slightly beyond this period. I have therefore conservatively dated the whistle to c.1885–1890.
Classic cylindrical Metropolitan form with flared mouthpiece and suspension loop. It also retains an old cord with knotted/tasselled end, which I have left exactly as found. I cannot confirm whether the cord is contemporary with the whistle.
Good antique condition overall with expected surface wear, tarnishing, marks and signs of age and use. Please examine all photographs carefully as these form part of the description.
An appealing late Victorian example of one of J. Hudson\'s early Metropolitan Patent whistles, and a good piece for a collector of antique whistles, police memorabilia or Victorian social history.
