Rare Victorian natural history specimen, dating to circa 1900, featuring a preserved bird’s nest arranged on a branch with moss and surrounding vegetation. Displayed under a glass dome on the original walnut wood base, 10.25” high by 9” round in diameter.The nest comes from a long-tailed bushtit (Aegithalos caudatus), a small bird found throughout Eurasia known for its intricate nest construction. Its spherical shape is made from dried grasses, mosses and feathers.An unusual example of Victorian collectors’ interest in natural history. The nest is finely presented, almost like a miniature landscape.This piece has exceptional provenance. Originally owned by Emma Hawkins, a well-known collector of natural history specimens, ethnographic objects, and stone tools. Later acquired by prominent antiques dealer Warner Dailey. Sold through Sworders Fine Art saleeers in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex, one of England's most respected sale houses.Please note the crack in the glass. It is currently stable but the cloche should be replaced. There’s also a small chip to the turned edge of the base. Otherwise excellently preserved for its age, with interior elements intact.
