Antique WWI Cruchon & Emons Brass Compass Berne, Switzerland U.S. Engineer Corps For Sale

This item is being sold for the employee appreciation fund at thecontinuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Maine where I live with myhusband.All items are donated by the residents of the community andthe net proceeds of all sales go to the fund that is distributed annually tothe wonderful staff who help the many elderly residents here.I willgive all the information I can about each item, but I am not the originalowner.

I have here a Antique WWI Cruchon & Emons Brass CompassBerne, Switzerland U.S. Engineer Corps.This was donated by a new resident, it was handed down from a relative whoserved in WWI. It is about 2” in diameterand about ¾” thick. I know nothing abouthow this compass is supposed to work but it doesn’t seem to have any movingparts inside and the glass is all fogged over so it’s hard to see the face ofthe compass. Etched into what I think isthe front cover is “U.S. ENGINEERS CORPS”. Etched into the back is “CRUCHON &EMONS BERNE” and “No. 61702” (the number is also inside the cover). Here’s what I found online about the compasses:

• The Cruchon& Emons Berne compass refers to a rare, highly collectible marching compassmanufactured in Switzerland for the U.S. Engineer Corps during World War I.Because they were more reliable than American-made compasses at the time, theU.S. government commissioned them as field equipment for troops.
• Key Featuresof the Compass:
• Material& Build: Machined from a solid block of brass with an aged patina, heavyfor its small pocket size.
• MirrorSighting Design: Features an integrated highly polished brass plate in the lid.Users can look at a target ahead and read the mirrored bearing scale on thedial below simultaneously.
• TransitLock: Equipped with a thumb-ring transit lock that secures the jeweled compasscard needle in place when the lid is closed.
• LuminousDials: The original dial face and interior lid were painted withearly-20th-century radium paint, which can sometimes still be faintly seen.
