Antique Wedgwood John Cutts Pattern 701 Coffee Set Puce Landscape 1812-1822 For Sale

Exceptional early 19th-century Wedgwood porcelain three-piece coffee service, painted by noted porcelain artist John Cutts (1772–1851). The set consists of a lidded coffee pot, demitasse cup, and matching saucer.

A cataloguer with the V&A Wedgwood Collection identified the service as having been made between 1812 and 1822, during the period when John Cutts worked for Wedgwood. Cutts was a respected porcelain and pottery painter who previously managed the Pinxton porcelain factory in Derbyshire.

The handwritten “701” mark identifies Wedgwood Pattern 701, recorded as “Purple Small Landscapes, Gold Edge.” Each piece features finely painted monochrome purple-puce landscapes depicting bridges, cottages, trees, water, and pastoral scenery, complemented by hand-applied gilt edging and accents.

The coffee pot has a particularly elegant form, with a domed landscape-decorated lid, tall curved spout, loop handle, and molded gilt-accented decoration where the spout joins the body.

CONDITION

Very good antique condition for a porcelain service approximately 200 years old. The coffee pot retains a Ceramic Restoration Studios label documenting professional restoration completed in November 1998. The precise restored area is not stated on the label. There is age-related wear to the gilding and other minor wear consistent with age, previous use, and careful handling.
