Description

Antique Norwegian Christmas Export Confectionery Tin

Chr. Bjørland & Co., Stavanger, Norway — “Bjørlands Juleskrin”

Offered is an authentic early 20th-century Norwegian lithographed holiday confectionery box produced by Chr. Bjørland & Co. A/S of Stavanger, one of the principal export manufacturers operating during the Scandinavian trade boom before World War I.

The lid features three traditional Norwegian “nisse” (also called tomte) — household Christmas spirits central to Nordic folklore and predating the modern Santa Claus. The figures are shown in festive celebration, playing folk instruments and dancing among stylized floral decoration. This imagery belongs to the Nordic National Romantic art movement, popular in Scandinavia circa 1895–1915.

The interior displays the elegant script “Bjørlands Juleskrin” (Christmas Casket/Gift Box) over the original gold japanned varnish finish, with the company’s distinctive fisherman trademark holding a cod and marked “Chr. Bjørland & Co. A/S Stavanger – Trade Mark.” The base is stamped “Printed in Norway,” confirming manufacture for export markets, most commonly Britain and the United States.

Although best known internationally for their canned sardine exports, Stavanger companies also operated advanced lithographic tin-printing facilities. These firms produced decorative holiday candy and biscuit gift boxes using the same technology employed for export food packaging. Many of these tins were purchased by Scandinavian immigrants in America as traditional Christmas gifts, making surviving examples today highly collectible.

Dating is supported by:
• Pre-World War I lithographic style
• Gold japanned interior varnish
• English export marking “Printed in Norway”
• Corporate “A/S” designation

Estimated production: circa 1905–1918

Historical Significance

This piece represents an intersection of three collecting fields:
• Early advertising packaging
• Scandinavian folk art
• Antique Christmas holiday material

Unlike common British biscuit tins, Norwegian export holiday tins were produced in much smaller quantities and were often kept and reused as family keepsake boxes, which explains their strong collector following today.

Authenticity

All paint and finish are original.
No modern coating, sealing, or restoration has been applied.

Size Approx: 6.75" Diameter x 2" High

Display Appeal

The vivid gold interior and lively folk imagery make this an excellent cabinet or holiday display piece and a strong addition to any:
• Advertising tin collection
• Scandinavian heritage collection
• Antique Christmas display
