Archibald Rutledge signed and framed B&W photograph of first S.C. Poet Laureate For Sale

Archibald Rutledge(1883-1973) was South Carolina’s first Poet Laureate and served from 1934 untilhis death. He was the author of morethan 50 books, including “The Heart’s Quest” and “An American Hunter.” A descendent of John Rutledge, signer of theU.S. Constitution, former governor of South Carolina and chief justice of theU.S. Supreme Court, Archibald chose a career as an English teacher and poet.Many of his poems deal with his devotion to hunting. Married with three sons,he taught his children the sport of hunting in the Appalachian Hills.

Rutledge’s hunting storiesoften appeared in “Outdoor Life and “Field and Stream.”

This framed, B&Wphotograph is inscribed by Rutledge with the words: “Your loving friend,Archibald Rutledge, April 6, 1955.” On the back of the photograph are thewords: “I love you.” The photograph hung on the wall of his home, HamptonPlantation. He gifted it to one of his cherished hunting companions. In theimage he appears to be sitting on the veranda of his home. In the close up, youcan see the message he wrote in pencil or black ink on the envelope in thepicture and signed it.

This 15.5 inch x 18.5 inch,framed photograph is covered by glass.

This is believed to be arare, signed photograph of historical significance that hung on a wall atHampton Plantation until it was gifted in 1955.
