Augusta, GEORGIA - Forest Hill Hotel: Built in 1927 as a luxury winter resort, the Forrest Hills-Ricker Hotel featured a golf course designed by renowned architect Donald Ross. Designed by architect Willis Irvin, it briefly served as an Army hospital in World War II, later becoming a VA medical center. The historic hotel building was unfortunately razed in 1988. The grand destination boasts a notable golf history where legend Bobby Jones famously won the 1930 Southeastern Open, launching his historic run at the Grand Slam. Key turning points in the estate\'s timeline include:- January 1, 1927: The luxury Forrest Hills-Ricker Hotel opened its doors. Managed by the Ricker family, it aimed to attract wealthy Northern tourists.- March 1930: The famous amateur golfer Bobby Jones shot a 13-shot victory in the Southeastern Open at the Forest Hills Golf Club before winning golf\'s Grand Slam that same year.- October 1942: The U.S. Army purchased the hotel and surrounding 340 acres to establish the Oliver General Hospital, aiding veterans.- 1951: The facility was transferred to the Veterans Administration and operated as a medical hospital.- 1980: The VA hospital facility closed and the buildings were ultimately demolished in 1988.- Present Day: Today, Augusta University owns the Forest Hills Golf Course, which remains open to the public.This Linen Era (1930-45) postcard is in good condition.
