Authentic Hellenistic Greek bronze signet ring engraved with a standing figure identified as Herakles (Hercules), depicted in a heroic stance. The figure’s proportions, posture, and simplified musculature are consistent with Hellenistic glyptic representations of Herakles as a divine protector and symbol of strength, endurance, and victory over chaos.
Herakles was one of the most popular figures in Hellenistic seal imagery. His image was widely used not only for heroic association, but also for apotropaic protection, as he was believed to ward off danger, illness, and misfortune. Rings bearing his image functioned as personal seals, protective objects, and statements of identity.
Iconographic Analysis
The engraved figure shows a compact, upright male form with emphasized limbs and torso, consistent with schematic Heraklean imagery used on small-format seals. While details are simplified due to scale, the stance and body treatment clearly separate the figure from generic mortals and align with heroic iconography.
The intaglio is engraved in reverse so that impressions in clay or wax would appear correctly oriented, confirming the ring’s function as a working seal rather than decorative jewelry.
Why Is The Ring So Small
The extremely small ring size is not accidental and not unusual for this class of object. Rings of this size were commonly:
