1888. A fine cotton printed military instructional handkerchief manufactured for the British Army in India designed and produced by Lieutenant-Colonel Carre Fulton. Fulton\'s Patent No. 12801. The entire handkerchief is printed in black with a printed red border. In the center are rules and maxims for soldiers, a diagram of a Lee-Metford rifle, signalling information, map reading keys, bugle calls and rifle drill instructions. Each corner has an image of a medal, the Victoria Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal, Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. Around the edge are tactical and trench building instructions. The final square after the tactical instructions reads \"It is the duty of every man to defent the country to which he owes his birth against every enemyh...LONG LIVE THE QUEEN\". The handkerchief is printed in the center \"Fulton\'s Patent No. 12801\".In extremely good condition. 24.75 X 21.5 inches.
A handkerchief of this kind is in the collection of the Australian War Museum and a similar handkerchief of a different patent number is in the collection of the Museums Victoria in Melbourne Australia.
The handkerchief was designed to be an aide-memoire, imparting military instruction to infantry as a convenient guite for soldiers to memorize military activities and training.Lieutenant-Colonel Carré Fulton served in the Durham Light Infantry in India until 1891.
