The Amalienborg is made up of four, almost identical palaces in rococo style, enclosing an octagonal square. The northeast palace serves as the home of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid. Another of the palaces is residence Crown Princess Margrethe.
The land for the building of Amalenborg was given by Frederik V to four relatives with the stipulation that each employ the noted architect, Eigtved, and follow the rococo style of design. The 4 palaces were built by the noblemen between 1749-1760. In 1794 when the Christiansborg was burned the Amalienborg was purchased to house the king and members of the royal family. Ever since that time the Amalienborg has been the official residence of the king.
