Historic Charlestown US Navy Yard, Massachusetts was active from 1801 through the Civil War and is now a National Historic Park. An Original Civil War Union Army Discharge with Federal eagle illus seal , issued by Captain John Milton Deane to Private James Patton, Company K, 29th Massachusetts Infantry February 15th, 1865 and ink sgd by Captain Deane ( awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for combat at Petersburg a month later).
It notes Private Patton enlisted as a Substitute , August, 1864 at Lawrence, Mass, and was discharged from the" Receiving Ship Ohio" at Charlestown Navy Yard, Charlestown, Mass "on account of Epilepsy", and includes his physical description, with place of birth listed as Donegal, Ireland. The Discharge is signed by Captain Deane "near Petersburg, Virginia, February 15th, 1865. The Discharge reverse has notations of discharge, approved by Major General John J Parke, and forwarded by General NB McLaughlin, as Brigade Commander, down the line to the Medical Director's Office at HQ 9th Army Corps. 1p 8 x 11" ptd/ink. The USS Ohio was a notable US Navy "Ship of the llne", with 104 guNs, serving in the slave trade suppression and in The Mexican War, until she became a receiving ship serving as a floating barracks at Charlestown.for new recruits at the end of her distinguished combat career.
