A number of prominent Cuban-Americans served in the War. Perhaps the most notable was Colonel Julius Peter Garesche, born in Cuba and educated at the US Military Academy 1837-41. He served in the Mexican War and on the Frontier. He saw his first combat of the Civil War during the Murfreesboro, Tennessee Campaign, as General William S Rosecrans Chief of Staff and was killed by cannon fire while riding with the General to the scene of some of the worst fighting of the Battle, Dec 31, 1862and mourned by both Union and Confederate officers who knew him from the Old Army.
