An Incomplete Original Civil War Letter from Private Moses W Pillsbury, at "Hilton Head Dec 12, 1861. to his friend "Foss" (Frank or Amaziah Foss, both also from Stratford , NH, with the 13th NHV) . He writes that he has heard the news of Fort Pickens, the weather here is like summer at home. He reports that is diet of salt pork, sea bread, flapjacks, et, unlike 19 days just spent on the ((Transport ship) "Baltic", with only fat pork and hard bread. The 7th has got furloughs but not us, he asks if Joe Leighton enlisted?, he also names girls for Joe Rhine who was left by his girlfriend, also tell Haven Buzzell that we kill every Secesh we see, unless they take the oath, and Haven must aso or we will take him prisoner" The partial letter stops here with next page(s) missing. The 4th New Hampshire had it's share of adventures, landing at Hilton Head after their troop ship, the. SS Baltic nearly foundered off Cape Hatteras. Private Moses Pillsbury, of Stratford, NH enlisted August 1861 and served w the 4th NHV until he was disabled late 1863 , along with many of his comrades, during the Siege of Fort Wagner, The Morris Island Campaign. This partial letter came others of Private Pillsbury's that I had, from the family of Frank and Amaziah Foss, 13th New Hampshire Infantry, the latter died of wounds at The Battle of at New Providence Church, VA 1863.
