The 49th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, in historic Sangamon County. The 49th served 3 years, and most of the men re-enlisted in 1864 as Veteran Volunteers. The unit took part in the Battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Tennessee, Corinth, Mississippi, Pleasant Hill, Louisiana the Red River, and Nashville, Tennessee.
