Brothers George and James Elliott, sons of Colt Armory artificer George Elliott, Sr, both enlisted for the War in 1861 and saw 3 years of action with the First Connecticut Heavy Artillery, from the 1862 Richmond Campaign & Frederickburg to Petersburg. An Original Civil War Letter from James, "1st Conn. Artillery Fort Richardson, Arlington Heights, January 22, 1862 to his Mother and siblings- He reports he has just received the telegram and learned of Father's Death, regrets that he and brother George cannot pay our last respects- the Colonel couldn’t grant them a furlough as General McClellan expects the Army to advance at any time. He and George had just received a letter form Father and suffers with Mother the affliction which leaves her a Widow. He asks how will the family meet expenses, please send me details of their circumstances and he and George will do what we can. The" 1st Connecticut Heavies"served in every campaign incl the Siege of Petersburg. A full size copy of their famous 13Inch mortar "Dictator" stands on the Statehouse grounds. Comes w service info- James and George enlisted as privates in 1861 serving 3 years; James re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer in 1864 and served to the War's End. Postwar he served as a draftsman at Colt Firearms. Their underage brother Edward deserted the Colt Rifles 5th CT infantry, fled to Canada and was never heard from again. Fort Richardson's ruins remain, a reminder of the system of forts that defended Washington.
