Captain Richard Henry Carter of Glen Welby, Fauquier, Virginia had a career as a Planter and Member of Virginia's House of Delegates. When the War broke out he raised company of volunteers for the 8th Virginia Infantry and was made captain. Captain Carter and Company B, served the entire War. Despite his wounds suffered at the Battle of Gettysburg, ended the War as Major Carter serving on General Lee's staff at Appomattox Court House. Two of his brothers were also commissioned -Winston Carter (17th Virginia killed at Williamsburg, 1862) and William Fitzhugh. Two of his sons also served both with the 8th Virginia- Captain Edward Carter severely wounded and captured at Gettysburg), and Alexander Carter. The 8th Virginia saw a lot of combat wth heavy casualties at First Manasssas Gaines Mill and Pickett's Charge Gettysburg where they suffered 80% casualties.
