CIVIL WAR WATERTOWN NEW YORK ARMY WIFE LETTER 1862 W EXC CONTENT:
$95.00

An Original Civil War Letter from a lady in Watertown (New York) to her sister Sophia, February 23rd, 1862 - after teasing her about her "citified" education, she reports that Mrs Soper is dead and her husband (James Soper, 60th NY) has been home on Furlough. The Regiment form Potsdam passed through town enroute for Washington and was honored at Sackett's Harbor with speeches and a dress parade. She reports that Eugene has dropped off his trunk here, he has enlisted and was on furlough, and promised he will do "better that before" Louis wrote and has no prospects of coming home yet- if I had known" I would have been a fine old maid rather than a forsaken wife" Mrs Haddock (Samuel, 35th New York) has gone to visit her husband in camp, also news of friends in Caliope , and friends off for California. The writer says she has bought a sewing machine and to tell Tom I will go in partnership with him and "have both heads examined", She asks sister to kiss baby Tom for me and finishes the letter on top inside margin , and asks sister to answer soon "and believe as ever your sister". 3pp ink on blue lined paper with embossed eagle and shield in top corners and narrow red/blue patriotic edge stripes. This came with an 1862 letter from Mrs EG Dupra at DePeyster, in adjacent St Lawrence County, NY. Archival repairs on folds, age spots, Overall VG.
