1932 GOODING IDAHO CITY OF ROCKS PRINTED POSTCARD – ROTARY CLUB MESSAGE
Original 1932 printed postcard captioned“CITY OF ROCKS – Scenic Wonder Near Gooding, Idaho.”
An early half-tone lithographed card on buff stock, showing the dramatic granite spires of southern Idaho’s famed City of Rocks formation.
The caption “near Gooding” reflects the promotional style of the 1920s–1930s Magic Valley boosters who tied regional attractions to towns such as Gooding and Twin Falls to attract tourists traveling the Union Pacific Highway and early automobile routes.
Reverse side is anofficial Rotary Club of Goodingpre-printed card used for inter-club correspondence. MailedAugust 20, 1932, bearing a clearGOODING, IDAHOduplex cancel and two green 1¢ George Washington stamps (Fourth Bureau issue).
Handwritten message reads:
“Aug. 19 — The Rotary Club of Gooding was pleased to have Rotarian Tom Haskot of your club present at our luncheon today.”
Signed“Fergus W. Riggs, Secretary.”
Fergus W. Riggs, secretary of the Gooding Rotary Club, appears in early-1930s city directories as a local businessman and civic organizer active in community trade events.
Tom Haskot, secretary of the Boise Rotary Club, was likewise a prominent participant in professional circles and inter-club exchanges of the period. Their correspondence typifies the formal courtesy system among Idaho Rotary Clubs during the Depression era.
The “City of Rocks” name refers to the granite spire landscape near Almo in Cassia County, a key emigrant landmark on the California Trail since the 1840s.
Before its designation as a National Natural Landmark (1964) and later National Reserve (1988), the site was promoted locally in postcards like this one, sometimes credited to Gooding or Twin Falls to align with regional tourism marketing.
