Civil War Era Wooden Fife!.
Here is a typical Civil War era Hardwood fife! This one was found with another fife that was single keyed. I can find no makers markings on this one. This fife is 14 1/2 inches long and is in pretty good condition for it's age. There are a few age cracks but I do not believe that they are deep and I believe this piece can still be played. The fife is finished with german silver ferrules on either end. This piece is made from a hardwood but I am not sure which one. Here are examples of the wood used in these period fife's:
